Miss Universe 2016

Iris Mittenaere, representing France, last month was crowned Miss Universe 2016. And while I personally enjoyed the show, chaos broke out on social media platforms.

For those who haven’t heard of this competition, Miss Universe is a beauty pageant in which one girl is selected to represent her country. Competition such as this one were created with the purpose of encouraging young women to be confident, powerful and caring, and the crown goes to the woman who can prove she’s all of these things though the swimsuit, evening gown and questions rounds.

On Facebook and Twitter, people were posting about how Raquel Pelissier of Haiti should have won the title instead of being the runner up. People were angry that the crown was put on France’s head and we’re hoping that Steve Harvey made another mistake.

A tweet posted by Patrice reads “#MissUniverse #MissUniverse #MissUniverseHaiti I have NO respect for the pageant!! Ms. France didn’t answer the last question. What cheats!”.

And a similar tweet by Lee was posted stating “when you actually realize that #misshaiti ‘s answer is much more sincere than any other else… 😄😄😄 #MissUniverse”.

The young woman were judged by Dayanara Torres, Miss Univese 1993, Mickey Boardman, fashion journalist, Sushmita Sen, Miss India 1994, Francine LeFrak, social entrepreneur and women’s empowerment activist, Cynthia Bailey, Former model/founder of The Bailey Agency (modeling agency), Leila Lopes, Miss Universe 2011, and the fans.

Now whether you believe the fans votes actually influenced the verdict, is a whole different issues. But these six/seven judges (depending on your personal beliefs), chose to give the title of Miss Universe 2016 to Iris Mittenaere because they believe she should have been given the crown. And while I truly believe Twitter is an amazing platform to voice your opinion on, in this instance it did not have an impact on the outcome.
