The OW Chartwells Dining Services has just opened the Market for the new fall 2019 semester, inside the Student Union Building at SUNY Old Westbury.
This new spot is a redesign of the dining area located to the right of the main entrance in the Student Union, which features the popular “Boar’s Head” deli sandwiches.
Along with the new name, the Market adds a new expansion of items which includes new menu items, more beverages, more frozen microwavable items, and for the first time, students can now purchase a whole assortment of items ranging from Bounty Towels to Clorox wipes.
Andrew (AJ) Morgan, the director of dining services at SUNY Old Westbury, states that the expansion of non-food items is for the convenience of students both commuting and residing on campus.
“All kinds of items for [student’s] residence hall or if [students are] traveling to campus on a daily basis from home,” he said. “Saving [students] the trip to Walmart or Target or wherever it is [students] had to hitch a ride to go.”
Morgan insists that these ideas of changes were apart of a group effort.
“All of this, this entire function here, came from the students,” he said. “The students were asking us for more variety, the students were asking us for an expansion of [the] use of the meal plan.”
Morgan states that he and his team worked “very closely” with the auxiliary services commission at SUNY Old Westbury to provide more changes to the food services around campus.
“I’m required to meet monthly with the auxiliary services corporation on campus,” he said. “They invite SGA, NYIT, faculty, staff, we go out of our way to make sure we get residence and commuters alike.”
The Market is only just one of the many food areas located on campus. The Campus Dining Center is the main “all-you-can-eat” buffet located in the Campus Center. The Panther’s Den is the food court located in the Student Union building and features Dinner 223 which serves all day breakfast for everyone on campus. Dunkin’ Donuts is in the New Academic Building, while the ‘Atrium Café’ brews Starbucks coffee and sells ‘Jack & Olive’ sandwiches in the Campus Center.
These locations are constantly being updated to fit students’ needs properly and to look more appealing.
According to Michael Gulczynski, Chartwells’ district manager, the Market is still going through more renovations.
“We’re trying to make [Old Westbury’s Dining areas] more appealing,” he said. “Like [The Market] we’re getting all new tables and chairs, trying to make it a better environment for commuters.”
More information about the dining areas on campus, including the hours of operation and the menu items, can be found on the website dineoncampus.com/oldwestbury, and students can submit feedback regarding any of the food services on campus directly online.
