The SGA held its open forum at the Multipurpose Room in the Student Union on October 29th. The Open Forum was marked as the third event during SGA week. The panel consisted of five SGA members: president Kalief Metellus; executive vice president, Ashley Alvarado; vice president of business and finance, Jahvon Spencer-Newell; executive secretary Kayla Wilson; and vice president of clubs and organizations, Kimberly Omezi.
Metellus began the forum by going over the goal for the event, which was to inform students of current campus-related issues and to receive student input, while also giving a report of actions being taken to address student concerns, remind students of important deadlines and announcements, and create a conversation between the SGA and student body in an effort to cultivate a culture that consists of an open communication between the student body and the school’s governing bodies.
In the first half of the forum, Metellus made important announcements related to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and registration of classes along with its deadlines. Asia Alexandre, residential hall association president, was introduced and briefly discussed what the RHA is and the upcoming events from the RHA, followed by the two Campus Activities Board leaders, Teliah Doctor and Marvin Johnson, who briefly talked about what the Campus Activities Board is all about.
Each of the panelists discussed their main goals during their tenure. Their goals range from installing computers in the Woodlands Residence Halls to making sure that student clubs remain active each semester. Metellus gave an update on the aftermath of the mold protest in which he and the SGA team are currently working together on writing a resolution to install dehumidifiers in each room of all the dorms. The floor was opened for questions and concerns from the audience in which are answered by the panelists. The panelists encouraged the audience to reach out to the staff or committees about their concerns and connect with the SGA team to address the issues.
