Trump’s Aquittal is a Failure of The Republican Party

The second impeachment trial of Donald Trump has come to an end, and wouldn’t you know it, the former President has once again escaped…..somehow. Of course, this isn’t the first time that Trump has been acquitted as his impeachment trial ended the exact same way with the Senate voting to acquit last year.

However, I thought that, maybe, this time, the Republican Party would learn its lesson. After all, even though Trump was found to have had a rather incriminating call with the leader of Ukraine which led to his impeachment, it did make sense as to why the Republicans didn’t want to impeach. After all, Trump was their candidate and they wanted to keep their nominee in the presidency.

But, this time around, it seemed as if Republicans were opening their eyes to what they had done, especially as Republicans like VP Mike Pence and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell started to speak up and voice their respective displeasures with the 45th leader in our country’s history. Alas, McConnell, even though he has made it clear that he has dislike for the man, despite voting to acquit him.

Now, this may make sense to you, at first, especially when you consider the fact that McConnell and Trump are both Republicans, and  party teammates stick together, no matter what. However, you also have to consider the fact that former presidential candidate and US Senator, Mitt Romney, who is also Republican, has also spoken out against Trump in the past, voted to impeach him, not only in this trial, but in the first one, as well.

To me, this says that some force in the Republican Party pressured these politicians to vote in Trump’s favor, despite their reluctance to do so, and that Romney was one of the only ones to not give into the pressure. After all, this man, even throughout Trump’s presidency, has shared viewpoints that make it clear that he wants the Republican Party to be better than what Trump represents.

Unfortunately, those who resist the pressure of “He’s in the political party, so you must vote in his favor” seem to be in the minority, despite the fact that Trump has alienated pretty much everyone in his party, he is still acquitted, and can now run for office again in the next race (2024), if he so chooses. Lord help us….
