Mohammad Anwar, 66-years-old, was killed while working his UberEats job on March 23rd in Washington, D.C.when two teenage girls tried to carjack his vehicle. The girls, ages 13 and 15, are  being charged with felony murder,  armed carjacking, and other offenses.

The two women allegedly tasered him during their attack. With a crowd witnessing the carjacking, Anwar could be seen in a video that has gone viral screaming for help. The graphic video features him yelling , “They’re trying to take my car.” Just moments later, the girls  begin speeding down the street with Anwar hanging on to one of the car doors. The video has been seen by millions on the internet, as well as being shown in court last week.

Anwar came to the United States to live the “American Dream” and provide for his family. Now his family will have to go on without their loving father, grandfather, husband, brother, and uncle.

The girls admitted they went to the location of the attack with a goal to steal a car. After one of them jammed the car in gear and swung the steering wheel, Anwar was killed. Due to their being juveniles, their names will not be announced.

There is now a GoFundMe page that is set up to help Anwar’s family. It has raised just over $1 million.

The GoFundMe site states, “Mohammad Anwar was a hard-working Pakistani immigrant who came to the United States to create a better life for him and his family. He was simply at work… providing for his family, when his life was tragically taken in an appalling act of violence.”

As of  March 29th,there had been 101 carjackings in D.C. this year, compared with 22 during the same period in 2020, according to the Washington Post. There has been a 35 percent increase in auto theft. Carjackings and auto thefts have increased across the country. The Post further notes:”One cause may be the pandemic: More delivery people are on the roads, providing more opportunities for crime, and closed schools have left many young people unsupervised.”

According to the laws of Washington D.C., a 13 year old is prohibited from being tried as an adult. At the age of 15, the D.C. Attorney General’s office can petition for a case to be transferred to the adult court system. As of now, according to Fox 5 DC, the teen girls are likely to be offered plea deals.
