Review of Marvel’s Eternals

Photo creds: IMDb

Marvel’s Eternals stars big names such as Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, and Kit Harrington. The film was directed by Chloe Zhao. It follows a new set of superheroes called the Eternals, ten immortal beings that have existed on Earth since the beginning of time and serve the Prime Celestial, Arishem.

After having been thought to be defeated, Deviants make their sudden reappearance on Earth, Sersi (Gemma Chan) and Sprite (Lia McHugh) are saved by Ikarus (Richard Maddens) after being attacked by a Deviant. The three decide to travel to their leader, Ajak (Salma Hayek), to inform her of the Deviant’s reappearance and figure out what they will do.

The team reunites after 500 years to fight the Deviant, who, this time, have more advanced powers. The Eternals now have to once again save humanity from Deviants, but  through this learn about their existence and face unforeseen problems along the way.

Eternals is significant in this phase of Marvel movies because it didn’t use previous characters to introduce the new crew. Previously, the death or retirement of the old superheroes has been used to usher in a new generation of characters. Eternals did an excellent job of expanding the viewer’s existing knowledge of the Marvel cinematic universe and making this new team fit right in.

Controversy has surrounded the release of the film due to one of the main characters, Phastos, being part of the LGBTQ community. The film was banned in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar due to Marvel refusing to remove scenes involving Phastos and his husband.

There were two post-credit scenes for the film, one of which is well known and introduces Thanos’ brother, Eros, played by Harry Styles. This scene hints towards a sequel for the Eternals. The second post-credit scene is yet another introduction for the character Black Knight.

The plot of Eternals was incredibly thought out and wasn’t at all predictable. The movie kept me on my toes and wondering how the conflict would be resolved. The true villain was kept hidden for the majority of the film and it came out of left field when it was revealed. I will definitely be looking forward to the sequel and seeing these characters again.
