Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a step in the right direction for the Pokémon series, but still needs improvements to keep up with modern gaming. Arceus moves away from the traditional formula Pokémon followed for 26 years to a more monster hunter esc system for players to enjoy with a new battle and capture system, but lacking graphics and zones to explore. So, is it worth picking it up?
Arceus takes elements from different series, mainly monster hunters in how they interact with the player. The main objective for the player is to get to an 11 stars ranking, and this is achieved by catching and battling different kinds of Pokémon. Traditionally, to catch a wild Pokémon, the player could just press a single button to throw a Pokéball. However, Arceus now allows for a more interactive catching experience where the player must aim and adjust the angle before they can throw a Pokéball.
With the new catching mechanic added into the game, catching Pokémon has become more interactive and fun. With the games campaign lasting 20 to 25 hours alone to complete, people will be busy completing Arceus.
While there is fun to be had in the game there are some major issues with the game as well. One major issue is with the zones the players explore; they are empty. The world feels empty with nothing in it, but the Pokémon and resources scattered for the player to catch while going from point A to point B becomes tedious after a few hours.
The graphics are also something Arceus struggles with. At some points the game looks great, but they are few and far between with the game looking like an early PlayStation 2 game. The game also still lacks the addition of voice acting, meaning that all cutscenes are only expressed with facial expressions.
Overall Arceus is a fun game but not worth the $60 price tag. Both veterans and casual fans will enjoy the new mechanics introduced within the game, but with dated mission objectives, less than ideal visuals, and a lifeless open world, I’d recommend picking this up on the rare Nintendo sale.
