“The Costal Grandmother” is a trend that is taking over TikTok, and one that I am currently obsessed with myself.
The Google definition of a Coastal Grandmother is a “..term [that] describes a luxe-meets-coastal style you might find in a well-to-do grandmother’s home in Santa Barbara or Hilton Head, defined by neutral shades; soft linens and crisp whites; a casual lifestyle and throw pillows galore.” This style of fashion is inspired by iconic queens Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep and Jane Fonda. All of these women have done many movies that have the Coastal Grandmother vibes. Some of these include Something’s Gotta Give, It’s Complicated, Father Of The Bride, The Big Wedding, and Monster In-Law.
The Coastal Grandmother has comforting energy. They makes you feel safe; she goes to the local market to get groceries, loves to cook, loves a good button-down, and you can feel the love in her home and its richness.
The Coastal Grandmother trend currently has 2.6 million views on Tiktok and counting, with TikTok-er @lexnicoleta taking over the internet by storm with the trend. After watching all of her videos, I realized I myself am a Coastal Grandmother.
Well, one that’s on a budget.
Here’s how you can become one as well, but on a budget. It all starts with your space, your room, apartment, and house. You can start small, and I recommend Target. They have many Costal Grandmother-inspired things for less money.
Stay with neutral warm colors as well as white, gray, and beige. Plants can also be a great addition to this aesthetic. Add some of your favorite books to your shelf, and some pictures of the people you love. Make your space feel breezy and filled with love.
The next step is how to dress like a Coastal Grandmother. You don’t have to be a real grandmother to be a Coastal Grandmother. Button Down shirts are a great option, and turtlenecks are great for when it’s cold. Stores such as Zara, H&M, and Forever 21 have some great options for these that are affordable. The Costal Grandmother style is clean with some jewelry, maybe even a hat.
So now that you know what a Coastal Grandmother is… tell me: are you one?
