Review: 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

“13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim,” is a different sort of Turned Based Strategy, but it comes with an anime heavy story that I recommend playing.

13 Sentinels is a game with 13 main characters, all having the ability to control giant robots to fight kaiju’s, that are attacking the fictional version of Japan. The game takes inspiration from old Japanese movies such as the Godzilla series, with it being more comparable to more modern films such as Pacific Rim. The story is told in a nonlinear device so the narrative is told from different characters to tell one overall story. The storytelling is seen more like a visual novel while the gameplay is more a Turned Based strategy game, a game like chess where player and enemy take turns moving units to take out the other. The game also looks great even with the switch port the game visuals help immerse the player in the world.

The game takes about 30 hours to complete so it gives plenty bang for your buck.

While there a lot of things that I personally enjoyed in the game, there are issues that should be taken in consideration. The game is very anime and has some of the major issues that anime traditionally has such as cliches and tropes. While the main cast is interesting and enjoyable, the supporting characters are cookie cutter and add very little to the story. The story can also be confusing as it goes into time travel and gets messy quickly with it shifting from the 1920s all the way to the 2065. Finally, the game has the same issue that other Role-Playing Games have in that after a few hours of playing you’re grinding the same enemies to become more powerful.

Overall I’d says the game is worth getting if this sort of game interests you. While personally the game isn’t worth the full 60 dollars that the recent switch port of the game cost, if you access to play the game on PlayStation, I recommend getting it on that as the game usually goes for a third of that price at 20 dollars.
