“Welcome to the Fitness Court, the world’s best outdoor gym.” This is one of the first things you see written on the wall when you walk up to one of SUNY Old Westbury’s newest additions to campus, the “Fitness Court.”
The outdoor gym is among the many new upticks to campus for the fall of 2023, which includes the brand new baseball and softball fields, new soccer fields, and new basketball courts which have all seemingly brought the campus to life. The Fitness Court is located outside in between the Campus Center building and the athletic fields.
The court features pull up bars, gymnastics rings, and other forms of equipment that allow you to workout using only the resistance of your own body weight. This is a form of exercise known as ‘calisthenics.’ This, of course, is what separates it from the other gyms on campus which are located in the Clark Athletic Center.
It has been about a month since the semester started and in speaking with some of the students on campus, it seems they are extremely pleased with the new addition. “It’s great,” said Junior commuter student Lou Peluso, “because it is so open, you never get that crowded feel that an indoor gym gets no matter how many people are here. There’s nothing like coming out here on a nice day and getting a workout in.”
The only issue with the gym being located outdoors is the fact that the cold days are coming soon. We have already had a taste of the poor weather with the rain storms, which of course has limited the use of the gym. It will be interesting to see just how often the gym is used in the upcoming weeks. Nevertheless, it is safe to say the Fitness Court has been a great addition and fits in beautifully on campus.
