Horizon Forbidden West is a generic open world game that feels like something that came out in 2018, not 2022. Horizon Forbidden West is a sequel to the much beloved Horizon Zero Dawn by Guerilla Games, who are known for the Killzone games before releasing the Horizon games.
Horizon has the benefit of having the backing of Sony and it really shows in the visuals of the game. The game looks amazing on the PlayStation 5 and takes full advantage of the console with immersion with the controller. The concept of the game as well remains awesome, the idea of animals being robotic looks and feels great for players to go against.
While the graphics look great, that alone does not give the game a break when it comes to the game play. Horizon feels like every other open world resource collecting game. If you’ve played games like Far Cry or Assassin Creed, it feels as though you’ve played Horizon Forbidden West before, as it’s the same open world game where you collect resources or hunt different enemies to get those resources but with a visual upgrade over those games.
To the crafting system to make better weapons, to the skill tree that most of those older games must make the player more powerful, it feels like a 2010 to 2015 open world game.
Horizon Forbidden West seems like it has received all this praise because of the backing of Sony as most Sony backed games receive near universal praise. Horizon Forbidden West received 8, 9, and 10s ratings but for me the game is bang average but with a shiny coat of paint over it. I recommend waiting for this game to be on sale if you wish to pick it up or look for any other open world game or just play the previous title.
