Netflix’s new show called The Ultimatum: Marry or Move on produced by Nick and Vanessa Lechay who are also behind Love is Blind. The first episode aired on April 6 and the season ended on April 13.
This is not your average dating show where someone wants to find their true love. Quite the contrary. The show is based on couples who come on the show in which one person in the relationship gave an ultimatum, hence the name, to their significant other. When a couple is madly in love of course it’s inevitable to think about their future together. In this show, one person is either ready to start a family and get married and their partner does not feel ready, for whatever reason, to start that stage in their life.
There are points in a relationship where it hits the breaking point, especially if it is your longest relationship yet. Either there are issues committing to one another long term or wanting to explore to date other people. In this reality dating show series, the couple gets put to the ultimate test of whether they are ready to get married or move on forever.
There are six participating couples and one person from each couple was issued the ultimatum of either getting ready to marry or moving on to their separate ways. Going on to the show they face multiple challenges. Throughout the show, each consistent will be getting the chance to know and date other people. They will then get the chance to live with another person whom they choose that is NOT their partner for three weeks.
Then they will live with their partner who came into the experiment originally for another three weeks. This is to see whether or not they are ready to change and commit to their significant other or do not want it all. After the three weeks, it is at that point whether the participants will make a decision of getting engaged, go with the person they decided to live with within three weeks, or simply just move on with their lives.
The contestants throughout the show connect with their chosen partners on multiple levels. They get to know the person emotionally, and they help one another understand what needs to be worked on, for example fixing their communication skills. The outcome is to hopefully become a better person and digest everything the experiment taught you. It either works, or it doesn’t! For some couples, it did work, and for others not so much.
The show is very interesting to watch. There are several heated moments and challenges that the couples go through and as an outsider, it is hard to watch at times. The oldest person on the show is 30 and the youngest is 23. I feel that it would be more convenient if it dealt with people who are 25 and up. I am 22 years old turning 23 and I am nowhere near ready to get married let alone have kids.
Older people are challenged with these kinds of issues all the time. I also feel they may feel more pressure wanting to get married and start a family due to their age and being in a relationship that lasts more than 3 years. Many of the contestants are younger and in their early to mid twenties. It doesn’t feel as risky to end a relationship at that age as it is as a couple who are in their mid-thirties.
