World College Radio Day is all the buzz for ongoing listeners, newcomers and networkers alike. In an age where streaming platforms dominate our media intake, the radio has always been a safety net for voices to be heard. The radio isn’t going anywhere but straight to our ears.
Across the United States, only four colleges were chosen for this special day’s broadcast. Old Westbury Web Radio, known as OWWR for short, was the only radio station on the Eastern Seaboard that was selected. OWWR’s big break is Friday, Oct. 3 at 11:00 a.m. World College Radio Day stretches out over 24 hours, and OWWR has 28 minutes to show the station and listeners what it’s made of.
The theme this year, which resonates with the backbone of SUNY Old Westbury’s philosophy, is “Tune in to the People.” Day in and day out, the diligent team at OWWR strives to network and bring attention to culture, education and entertainment in its productions.
Angelina Zavala, a core member of OWWR, and her team will host topics for the event regarding: the usage of AI in education, mental health awareness for students, campus safety, equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities, immigration concerns and Title IX issues.

Old Westbury has always been a community led by the students, for the students, and it is no stranger to embracing all walks of life and prioritizing the success of each individual.
“Old Westbury has given me the opportunity to express my passion by providing resources like radio stations, and they always make sure to put the students first,” Zavala said, citing some of the numerous clubs, workshops and other resources that university offers to ensure an equal amount of attention is distributed across all walks of life.
Zavala said her team is confident as this isn’t their first, or last, radio-rodeo. She said the station is approaching 20 years of production, and the future includes plans to celebrate these milestones, as well as to reach new communities and branch out to more off-campus events.
“The future of OWWR is the students and what we’re doing now,” she said.
While OWWR does not yet have their official time slot, listeners can tune into the live broadcast on Oct. 3 by clicking here.
