On October 10, 2022, people around the world will recognize World Mental Health Day. The World Health Organization said the day provides a chance to “raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health.”

The organization’s theme for this year, “Make mental health & well-being for all a global priority,” reflects a worldwide effort to seek mental health wellness. The COVID-19 pandemic created depression and anxiety around the world. These disorders rose “more than 25% during the first year of the pandemic,” according to estimates.

As a college student, you may experience mental health issues. The Mayo Clinic reported that “a recent study found that 1 in 3 college students experiences significant depression and anxiety.” Some influences include academic and societal pressure, financial hardship, and relationships.

SUNY Old Westbury provides resources to those struggling with mental health. Counseling & Psychological Wellness Services aims “to support and enhance the psychological health and wellbeing, personal growth and development of students.” The individualized services provided remain “confidential and free of charge to students.” While confidential, certain situations require a release of information for legal and/or ethical reasons. These limits are listed on the Counseling & Psychological Wellness Services website.

The website also provides resource links, general guidelines to help you make a plan, and advice for helping a friend. Some linked websites include National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Triving Campus, and Half of Us (Mental Health is Health).

Faculty members can visit this website if they see a student needs support. There, they will find information on “Helping Students Face Emotional Difficulties… Recognizing Students in Distress… [and] Making a Referral to the Counseling Center.”

If you would like to contact SUNY Old Westbury’s Counseling & Psychological Wellness Services, you can send an email to counselingcenter@oldwestbury.edu or call (516)876-3053. This World Mental Health Day, make your mental health a priority.
